Day 6...I'm trying to work on developing my visual imagination. Most of the focus in my education was in language and while my verbal vocabulary is quite strong my visual vocabulary feels quite stunted. I struggle greatly with drawing from my imagination and I'd like to improve it. I started working through Carla Sonheim's "Drawing Lab" book today. One exercise has you draw 20 dogs...supposed to be the same dog, same pose using a big chiseled marker on notecards. The idea is to draw quickly, getting down only basic info and to experiment with different marks. The reference was just a basic sketch of a dog. I must admit I had fun with this one. I like to bend rules so I didn't adhere to the same pose rule. I really like some of these dogs. I'm going to pick those out and work with them some more. I'd really love to write and illustrate a book about Kagero but I've struggled with imagining her as an illustration so I think these might help me with that!
Bonus drawings...after the quick dog drawings earlier, I decided to give illustrations of Kagero a try. Not there yet but I'm seeing potential and will keep trying. For me, the trick is in her eyes, if I can get those right, I think I'll be able to make illustrating her happen.
I gotta be honest and say that I've been feeling anything but creative lately. We moved from the Portland area to Eugene in April and I just haven't really recovered from the upheaval yet. While I have an art space in our apartment, I lost my big art studio in the move and a lot of my supplies are in storage. Just feel a tiny bit lost and it's been hard to create consistently, hence this new challenge. I'd really like to improve my people drawing skills but I really admire artists who can capture faces and likeness in just a few lines so I decided today around with cartooning. I've got a long way to go in this but I really like some of the marks I've made and I think there's some potential here.
Bonus drawing for today. I'm reading a book (ok like 20 books) on creativity and it was talking about the earliest memories about art from several artists. It made me think of mine and then I felt called to draw it...this is the first time I've ever drawn a memory. I can't attest to the accuracy of the sofa style (it was green for sure), orange shag carpet or blue walls but it was the 1970s after all.
The memory is one of my earliest at around 4 years old. I drew my first masterpiece...a sailboat in blue marker on the side of our green vinyl sofa. I was so proud until the parents saw it and I was so busted...everyone's a critic
This is like my fifth drawing of the day but the only one I'm willing to share right now. Still not as good as I'd like but whatever...gotta find my way back to my groove, but I guess I'm not sure I had one in the first place.
Wow...this is possibly the worst drawing I've ever made. Poor Oscar has been subjected to some crazy humidity or something. I don't really have an explanation for how this happened but I'm glad to have one more bad drawing out of my system! I'm hoping tomorrow's drawing will be better.
It's been a while since I blogged regularly so I almost forgot to post today's challenge drawing. Since I'm about to head to bed I won't say much about this one. It started out as a pencil drawing but decided it wanted to be a watercolor instead...so I obliged. See you tomorrow!
Well...I've decided it's time for a new challenge. While last year's daily art challenge wasn't always fun, it did push me to make a lot of art. I've not made as much art this year as I'd like to have by this point in the year so I need another push. What I really feel drawn to (no pun intended) right now is drawing and illustration. I want to get better and quicker at drawing but I also want t work on developing my own style and to find my creative voice (still looking for it) and all the books, articles, websites I've read say the only way to do this is to do the work every single day. I can admit that I've not worked as hard As I need to this year and it's time to get to work. I also want to find some ways to make some money with my art. I really don't want to have to go back to work...so anyway I'll be sharing my drawings on this blog again. I hope you'll follow along!
My new challenge doesn't have much in the way of rules but they will be drawings or illustrations, finished or not. They might take 10 minutes or all day depending on how I feel about how it's going. I'll explore different objects, collections, maybe stories...who knows. I just hope to improve my skills and my imagination in this effort. Today's drawing is of 3 vintage telephones inspired by photos. It's crazy to me that there are now people in this world who have no idea what these things are!!!
Hey! I haven't been blogging here but I've been more active on my tumblr. Thought I'd make a post here today to celebrate a new painting. It's been a while since I've completed a big painting but today was the day! This piece is acrylic on stretched canvas, 24" x 36". I started out with black calligraphic lines on the blank canvas. I then started laying on lots of colors but soon made mud. I decided to wipe as much off as I could and ended up with some interesting colors. I decided to build those up and this emerged. I love it and I love how some of the black lines show through from beneath the colors. Yay!!!
I didn't post any process pics here but my new piece is finished (just needs a coat of varnish)! After many, many layers of paper, matte medium and paint it decided it wanted poppies on it so I gave it some poppies. I'm really pleased with how this turned out. It's 12"x12" on a 1/4" wood panel. It is for sale for $65 + SH, just let me know if you're interested. This piece was truly an exercise in trusting my intuition. I would do something (add paint or paper) and sometimes be happy, sometimes instantly regret it but then it started to come together and I really did find the flow with it. I can't wait to do this kind of thing again!
Happy New Year!! I hope your 2015 is off to a fantastic start! I just wanted to pop on and let you know that I've started a new blog on Tumblr that will cover my new daily art project I'm calling "Kierstan's Warm-Up Sketches". You can read all about it and follow along here: http://artistkierstan.tumblr.com/
