Whew...what a crazy couple of days. My lovely husband had a health scare on Wednesday evening that sent us to the emergency room. We were there until very early Thursday morning and didn't get to bed until 415am...23 hours after waking the prior morning. I took yesterday off, too. I tried to create stuff yesterday but I was just so tired that I just couldn't pull it together so rather than stress myself out about it, I figured another day off wouldn't hurt. But I felt better about things today and decided it was best to start creating again. Oscar is doing ok, btw, and we'll be following up on his health scare next week.
I got these new colored pencils on Wednesday but didn't have a chance to play with them. They are interesting as each pencil has three colors mixed into each core. Some pencils have three shades of the same color but others have three different colors. I used these pencils in today's sketches. The effect is subtle, although I didn't use any of the pencils with the three different colors for these. I like these and will have to experiment with them more.
Wow, 100 days! I decided to go back to colored pencil on black paper. This one is called "The Lone Clementine". It made me a little bit crazy...ok a lot crazy! As always, I'm not after ultra-realism, just that it kinda looks like what I'm drawing. I did the leaves & stem first and was super pleased with how they turned out. Then I got to work on the fruit...this did not go as well. The black paper doesn't have much texture (tooth) so it didn't take long for the paper to become saturated with the wax of the colored pencil. I wanted a really bright, vibrant fruit but I just couldn't cover enough of the black surface. I tried spraying it with workable fixative, I tried using a blending pen, blending pencil, burnishing pencil and finally scraped it off with an exacto knife...twice. I finally pulled out my heating pad to see if melting the wax would help. It did a little but again, I think the paper was just kinda done for, so I did my best to get as much color down and decided to just call it done! Happy 100 days to me!
