Wow...I was super behind here! I've been posting more regularly on Facebook and on Instagram (@artistkierstan), so if you want to stay up to date, I've been a bit more regular there! Blogging, unfortunately, is harder for me to keep up with but I'll try harder ;)
So, for the pieces posted above from bottom to top are: Avocado Maki, Black Tobiko Nigiri, Green Tobiko Uramaki (with salmon, cucumber and avocado), Kani (crab legs) Nigiri, and Ika (squid) Nigiri.
These were all created using a scanned ink drawing of each sushi piece and then painted using Photoshop. I'm still pretty much a beginner with Photoshop but I figured out how to create my own brush, which helped with the Green Tobiko Uramaki. I started off just making random dots on top of the rice for the tobiko eggs but I realized that was going to take forever so I made a selection of some of the dots I already made and defined the brush settings. It was great! I was so proud of myself because I haven't learned how to do that yet but I had noticed the option because it's right above the define pattern option, which I've used a ton when designing repeating patterns. So proud of myself!

Day 6 was Onigiri, which is a filled rice ball, or triangle in this case. I never had one of these but they looked yummy so I decided to include it in my collection. Day 7 is Uni Nigiri. I never tried Uni, its texture always kinda grossed me out so I opted to pass. Is it good? Do you like it?
Sorry for the drive by posting but I gotta go make some dinner. This allergy and mast cell thing has changed so much about my life but the having to cook every meal fresh and from scratch gets a little annoying sometimes but if it doesn't happen, I don't eat, which sucks. So, I'm off to make pizza!
Day 5 already for my sushi drawing/painting challenge. Where does the time go? Anyway, there are so many color options for Tobiko and I'm doing them all. Today is the red version. Like I said the other day, I never tried Tobiko...not sure I'd like the texture. I did have rolls that had the tiny eggs on the outside but they weren't really as noticeable as I think just a piece of nori and a little rice and a bunch of the eggs would be. I'm easily grossed out so I think this would push me over the edge but they have been fun to draw and paint!
Not much more to say today...Oregon is on fire and the air quality here has been extremely unhealthy and I'm feeling it. I haven't slept well in days and now I'm starting to lose my voice. The bad air quality is bad for anyone but those of us with chronic illnesses, the smoke and ash is really triggering. So, I'm knocking off early, going to make some dinner and then hopefully enjoy a restful evening with my husband.

Maguro Nigiri is my pick for day 4 of Sushi September. While I've never eaten the Tobiko nigiri, Maguro was my favorite! Maguro is tuna, it's usually pretty lean and when it's fresh and cold, OMG...heaven! I loved this kind of sushi so much, I could have eaten it every single day! We had a couple of favorite sushi joints when we lived in Portland, one was kinda upscale and one was the cheap, price per plate on a moving track kind of place. The maguro pieces were great at both places but for some reason, the cheap place was just a little bit better and it was cheap so I could eat my fill...and I did! We started going there so often that the owner started to recognize us and would make up several fresh maguro plates just for us, we were regulars for sure! I've tried not to get too down about all of the foods I can't have any longer with my food allergies and mast cell issues but sometimes I really miss some foods and maguro nigiri is one I miss terribly. I'm a good cook and not afraid to try new techniques so I've been able to find "replacements" for most of my favorites but there's no way to replace maguro nigiri...it's one of a kind!

It's getting late but I figured I'd better get this posted for today! It was a warm day full of smoke from nearby wildfires. Usually my air conditioner units do a decent job of filtering but there was just too much smoke in the air that you could smell it throughout the apartment...yuck! And my Mast cell disorder makes me super sensitive to stuff like this so I've been reactive all day 😩
Anyway, here's today's piece of sushi, Ebi Nigiri. I posted a piece of shrimp on day one but that was sweet shrimp, Amaebi. The process for this was the same as the others, hand drawn in ink, scanned, edited and painted in photoshop. I really like digital painting and I think I need to find some classes to learn some new techniques. I definitely need to figure out how to get faster at it!

Today's sushi illustration is Green Tobiko Nigiri. Honestly, I was never brave enough to try this kind sushi when I was still eating sushi but it makes for a lovely subject! I drew the outlines by hand in ink and painted the piece in Photoshop. If you had asked me a few years ago if I would ever be into digital art, I'd have laughed in your face...but I guess never say never, because I'm loving it!
I haven't mentioned this on this blog since it's been 2 years since I was last posting regularly but my health took a turn for the worse a few years back and it's taken a bit to get to the bottom of it. Essentially, I'm allergic to a lot of stuff and it's caused my immune system, my mast cells specifically, to become over reactive so I have reactions to stuff I'm not truly allergic to. It's been lots of fun...
One of my worst allergies at this point is to corn and corn derivatives, so essentially our entire food supply since corn is cheap and heavily used in, well, everything. So, I can no longer eat out because the possibility of cross-contamination is too great. To add to that, I'm also allergic to rice...so even if I could eat the fish (I'm not allergic to them but my mast cells don't like the fact that the fish is high in histamine), I wouldn't be able to have any of the fabulous sushi rice either. Dammit!
Well, I've already grieved for most of my favorite foods lost but I think that's why I've been so drawn (no pun intended), to illustrating food. I was already a pretty good cook, but I'm even better at it now (it's amazing the combinations of flavors one can come up with even when dealing with a small number of safe food items) and I'm a really kickass baker (not so good for the waistline!). But there are so many foods I can no longer have so I think it brings me comfort to illustrate them.
